Media Contact:| Corpus Christi – FREDDIE RECORDS is proud to announce the recent signing of norteño group SIGGNO to a worldwide recording contract, (excluding Mexico where the group is signed to Serca Music). The Rio Grande Valley based group lead by vocalist/accordionist JESSE TURNER signed a five album deal with Freddie. Siggno’s first album, AMOR Y DOLOR, under their new contract is scheduled to be released on May 9th. The lead single, “Mejor Dimelo,” written by Turner, will be released to radio the week of April 10th. A video for the track is currently in production.
“I haven’t been this excited since the release of our debut album,” says Turner. “I’m extremely happy and proud to be on board with a label such as Freddie.” Turner adds, “I know they have the necessary resources to promote Siggno, and most importantly they believe in me as an artist.” Freddie Records Vice President Freddie Martinez, Jr. signed the band and is confident that the label can re-establish the group on the charts. “Siggno is a young band with a tremendous amount of potential,” says Martinez. “Their style is a mix of old school norteño with just enough modern and progressive elements to make their music appealing to younger audiences.” Martinez adds, “Amor Y Dolor is a fantastic album that I’m sure will make a huge impact at radio and with record buyers in 2006.” Jesse Turner and Siggno released their debut CD, Al Principio, in 2001 to critical acclaim. Since then they have released two more full length albums, 2002’s Por Amor and 2004’s Caminando. “Unfortunately, our last album didn’t receive the support it deserved and fell completely off the map before it even had a chance,” says Turner. “That’s why Amor Y Dolor is so important for us. Not only does it present an opportunity to start fresh with a new label, but it’s a chance for the songs to tell stories about some of the tough times we’ve been through the last couple of years.” Turner adds, “I’m so appreciative of our fans that have waited patiently for us to land back on our feet. It’s going to be great to see their reactions to the new music. 9th Annual Palomino Fest Set This Labor Day Weekend Uvalde, Texas - August 31, 2005 - Uvalde's largest community heritage and music festival will be celebrating its 9th Anniversary this weekend with many new and exciting events for the entire family. Palomino Fest 2005 presented by HEB will be bigger and better than ever attracting literally thousands to the Uvalde Fairgrounds this Labor Day weekend of September 3-4, 2005. The gates will open at 12:00 noon each day through 12:00 midnight. A Ranch Rodeo beginning Saturday at 5 p.m. featuring ten teams of real cowboys on horseback will compete in events such as relay and rescue races, steer tying, team penning, calf branding, cow milking and more. Superando a todos los demás estrenos promocionales de la semana, la nueva versión de "No Tengo Dinero", el primer sencillo de "4", el nuevo disco de Kumbia Kings, ha conseguido el título de "Hot Shot Debut" de Billboard, señalando en esta forma que a sólo días de empezar a tocarse en radio, es el corte más impactante del momento en los mercados de Estados Unidos y Puerto Rico.
Junto a Kumbia Kings, en este lanzamiento de EMI Latin, la interpretación está a cargo de Juan Gabriel, el autor original de "No Tengo Dinero", y la banda de rock alternativo El Gran Silencio. De acuerdo a la clasificación de Billboard, que se formula a través del sistema BDS (Broadcast Data System), este Hot Shot Debut significa que por ahora -según su edición del 8 de febrero, 2003- la canción se sitúa en la posición número 11 de la lista de éxitos de la música regional mexicana y en el número 32 del Hot Latin Tracks. En este último chart se incluyen los cortes correspondientes a los tres géneros más representantivos de música latina: regional mexicano, pop/rock y tropical. San Antonio, TX (January 28, 2003) - Latin Music Superstar, Jennifer Peña, who has held the number one position on Billboard Magazine's "Hot Latin Tracks" chart for an impressive eight consecutive weeks (with the single "El Dolor De Tu Presencia"), will be headlining at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo this February 9th.
Jennifer Peña will be stopping in San Antonio as part of her current promotional tour and will hold one-on-one interviews this Thursday, January 30th from 2-4 pm at the SBC Center in San Antonio. Libre, her debut album with Univision Records, was released in June 2002 and has been platinum certified by the RIAA. The album remains among the ten most popular albums sold in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. "Vamos Al Mundial", a powerful dance-pop single included in this album, was the official song for the Spanish language broadcast of the 2002 World Cup. Still in the midst of a whirlwind international tour, Jennifer Peña recently performed at a special White House reception hosted by President George W. HOMETOWN BOYS DRUMMER DEAD
By Ramiro Burr Express-News Staff Writer. ------------------------------- Old-style conjunto music lost another hero Saturday when Hometown Boys drummer Jesse Martinez died of a brain aneurism in his hometown of Lubbock, Texas. Martinez , 34, suffered the brain aneurysm five minutes before the band was to go on stage Friday at Lubbock s Club Dallas, Tejas Records executive vice president John Whipple said. Martinez was rushed to University Medical Center in Lubbock and died 11:05 a.m. Saturday. Funeral arrangements are pending.

• Jesse Martinez, the youngest musician in The Hometown Boys, suffered a sudden and tragic aneurysm minutes prior to a scheduled performance in his hometown of Lubbock, TX on August 16th, 2002. He later died at University Medical Center in Lubbock. He was 34 years old.
• Recording on a CD entitled Echáme Mi La Culpa under a new contract with Tejas Records was completed prior to the death of Jesse Martinez. • Jesse and Ricky Martinez had just followed through with plans to dedicate "Echáme Mi La Culpa" to their older brother, Joe, who suffered a fatal heart attack while performing in Houston, Texas on January 22, 1998. One of the last songs recorded by Jesse was "Para Mi Amigo Joe Martinez". The new CD will now be dedicated as a tribute to the talent and musical influence of both brothers. • The Hometown Boys were the first Hispanics inducted into the West Texas Walk of Fame along side Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison and Waylon Jennings. • The extremely popular and talented band received a Tejano Music Award for "Best Album of the Year" and "Instrumental of the Year" as well as a Pura Vida Award for "Traditional Conjunto Album of the Year". • Their CDs are top sellers such as Mire Amigo which went gold in its first four days of release. Crash Claims Conjunto Star
By Ramiro Burr  Old-style conjunto music lost one of its top players Friday morning when Los Garcia Bros. singer and accordionist Santiago "Jimmy" Garcia was killed in a one-car accident. According to a Department of Public Safety report, Garcia, 27, was driving a 1995 GMC sedan east on U.S. 57 in Zavala County just after 5 a.m. when the car left the highway. It rolled over several times, and Garcia was thrown from the car, the report states. He was pronounced dead at the scene, one mile west of La Pryor. There were no passengers, and no other vehicles were involved, officers said. Los Garcia Bros. won conjunto album of the year at the 2002 Tejano Music Awards for the CD "La Rayita." In 2000, the group was named most promising band and picked up its first conjunto album award for "Los Garcia de Jimmy Garcia." Garcia was driving to San Antonio, where he lived. San Antonios Tejas Records will provide five of its top artists the opportunity to showcase to the international music industry at South By Southwest on Wednesday, March 13th from 8:00 until 2:00 am. The outdoor concert with a capacity of eight hundred will be held on the grounds of Mother Egans, 715 W. 6th Street between West Ave. and Rio Grande.
Mother Egans restaurant and pub was recently nominated for "Best New Austin Bar". This prime SXSW location is near La Zona Rosa and The Austin Opera House, sites of the other two major events of the evening. Of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS) of nominees for the “44th Annual Grammy
Awards” included the welcomed comeback project of Baldemar Huerta—better known
to this legions of worldwide fans as Freddy Fender—whose album 'La Musica De
Baldemar Huerta' received the nod in the “Best Latin Pop Album” category.
A winner of two past “Grammy Awards,” Fender was ecstatic when advised by phone of the nomination at his home in Corpus Christi, Texas. “Man, I am blown away,” he exclaimed “Getting to do the album with Michael and Ron Morales and all the talented people involved was a real kick for me…and now the nomination…I couldn't be happier!” The project, a tribute to his Hispanic heritage, takes listeners on a musical journey back to Fender's roots in the Rio Grande Valley, from which he rose from 'rags to riches,' overcoming career and cultural challenges to leave a major musical imprint that has to date spanned six decades. On January 24th, Freddy will face a challenge of a different sort. He will undergo kidney transplant surgery at the University of San Antonio. His daughter, Marla, will donate the kidney. With the surgery, Fender has the hope of reversing the deteriorating health problems that have faced him over the past few years. | Tejano Pioneer Hinojosa Dies in Crash | |

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS - The Tejano music world mourned the untimely death of pioneer Juan Hinojosa, a drummer and founder of early 1960s group Los Fabulosos Cuatro last week. Hinojosa, along with his 28-year-old son Michael, was killed Nov. 23 in a traffic accident on a rural Nueces County road approximately 20 miles west of Corpus Christi. An influential musician and drummer who had also played with the legendary Latin Breed band, Hinojosa, 51, was inducted into the Tejano Roots (Remembering Our Own Tejano Stars) Hall of Fame in Alice in August 2000. Hinojosa died at the scene, while his son died at a hospital three hours later. According to Department of Public Safety officials, the men were driving in dense fog toward Corpus Christi when their vehicle was hit by another vehicle that failed to stop at a stop sign. The driver of the other vehicle, Sally Hernandez, 50, suffered several fractures and was in stable condition Sunday. Hinojosa and his son, who lived in Alice, worked together as electrical engineers in Corpus Christi. Michael Hinojosa also played drums. In their early '70s heyday, Los Fabulosos Cuatro were considered an innovative group whose vocal harmonies influenced countless other bands. "Hinojosa was a very distinctive drummer," said Carney Fuentes, of the oldies retailer Tejanoclassics.com. "There has never been anyone in the industry that has replicated Juan's style of playing. And the same goes for Los Fabulosos as a whole." In recent weeks, Hinojosa had been in Austin, recording drum tracks for the upcoming hits retrospective/reunion CD project for the late '70s big band group Tortilla Factory. "I guess you can say that really, that's Juan's last contribution to la Onda," Fuentes said. Born April 17, 1950 in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, Juan Hinojosa formed his group in 1964 in McAllen, Texas. Through the years the combo was fronted by several singers, many of whom went on to solo careers, including Laura Canales, Adalberto, Joe Lopez of Mazz fame and Marcos Orozco, who would later lead David Lee Garza y los Musicales. Los Fabulosos' biggest hits included "Vestida de Blanco," "Prieta Linda, "El P?jaro Negro," "El Embrujado," and "Le Ando Siguendo Los Pasos." Los Fabulosos were also credited with helping introduce the organ and other keyboard instruments into la Onda Chicana, or early Tejano scene, of the early '70s. Hinojosa also played on the first two albums by Los Relampagos del Norte on Bego Records. In Alice, Texas, Javier Villanueva, executive vice president of Tejano ROOTS, and a former manager for the group said, "They were trendsetters in their time. They liked to experiment. Their arrangements were so advanced that very few groups could imitate them." In the late '70s, Hinojosa joined the Latin Breed for several years, recording on the albums "New Horizons" and "Latin Breed de Texas," before reforming Los Fabulosos. "Hinojosa will be remembered for his compassion and his willingness to share his talents with his community," said George Balli, executive director of the Tejano Academy of Fine Arts in Corpus. Juan Hinojosa's nephew Armando Hinojosa, Jr., remembered him as an easygoing man who was dedicated to his music. "Everybody got along with him real well, but when it came down to practicing and getting the parts right, that's when he was serious," he said. "We used to call our practice sessions 'marathons' because we would start around noon and go past midnight. Sometimes the sun would be rising and we would still be practicing." Former Latin Breed member and creative designer Ruben Cubillos recalled Juan Hinojosa's honesty. "His word was unlike that of most musicians-it was a handshake one could cash with trust written all over it," he said. A rosary was held Nov. 27 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Alice. By Lucy Moreno La Prensa Newspaper What or who is a Latino Star? A very good example would be Paul Rodriguez who is the most successful and known Latino comedian, actor, producer and director. But his resume does not stop there - add philanthropist to the list and, of course, good father and son. I recently had the opportunity to speak with this Latino Star and I was able not only to see his comical side, but a serious side to him. He came into San Antonio early. As he says, San Antonio is his home away from home. We began by talking about his new movie role as the outspoken fight physician Freddie Pacheco in Columbia Pictures' Ali, which was directed by Michael Mann and produced by John Peters, and will be released December 7, 2001. The Ali all star line-up is very impressive Will Smith, Ron Silver, Jaime Fox and John Voight. While he was heading up to San Marcos for some R&R is how I was able to catch up with the comedian to ask him about his career and what he had planned. He started by saying, "I'm celebrating my 20th year in show business and you know this has been the busiest two years of my life. I just got a huge part in Mohammed Ali, which comes out on December 7. I did a great movie called Tortilla Soup with Héctor Elizondo (release date August 27, 2001) that I think it's going to be a huge hit. I've got Rat Race with Whoopi Goldberg and Cuba Gooding Jr. (release date July 20, 2001). I have G-Men directed by Christopher Coppola, coming out in February. Then there's The Shipment with Mathew Modine (release date October 20, 2001). I also did Crocodile Dundee in LA with Paul Hogan. I have done like eight movies in a little under two years." His credits do not stop with the above mentioned movies. He has worked on Mambo Café which starred Danny Aiello and Thalia. But one of my favorites of his was last year's The Price of Glory, starring Jimmy Smits. Rodriguez did such a good job I hated him for a while after the movie due to the character he portrayed. Paul has also found time in his busy schedule to guest star in several episodes of ShowTime's original series Resurrection Boulevard. Asking him how he felt about portraying Freddie Pacheco he said, "I met Freddie Pacheco in person and he was a wonderful man. You know he was the only white (he's Latino) doctor that use to go to Harlem and had a rapport with the poor white and the poor black- that's how he met Ali. I would talk to Pacheco about my performance of him. Although I'll be honest with you - this movie is not about Dr. Pacheco, it was about Muhammad Ali, but I'm proud to be in it. I think in December when it comes out it will sweep the Academy Awards, to be honest with you." Another project he is starting on July 17, 2001, "The Latin Version of the Kings of Comedy," a theatrical release in which he stars and is based on his 38-city tour. It will be shot in El Paso and will also star Cheech Marin, as host as well as Nayeb Estefan (Emilio and Gloria's son) as a DJ spinner. Other comedians included are Alex Reymundo, Joey Medina Marilyn Martinez and the very funny Gabriel Iglesias as well as others. Paul's excitement over the project was evident in his description, "We've got a little taste of everything. I'm really happy with this group. We've got different cultures: Puerto Rican, Cuban and Mexican. I'm expecting big things, and we're producing it, and it's all Latino talent." He also just signed a deal with ShowTime to star in and be executive producer of his own weekly series. It is based on Paul's real life role as one of the owners of the Los Angeles hot salsa club the Conga Room, but it's titled Mohito Nights. When I asked Paul concerning the series, he enthusiastically explained, "We just got the green light, and it'll be the first television series produced, written, directed and starring a Latin ensemble cast. You know, all of sudden its like God decided to just smile on me. I'd like to think that maybe my dad past away and went to heaven and talked to God and said, 'Ándale dale quebrada al qüerco.' The phone has literally been ringing off the hook. It's been wonderful." San Antonio is a special town to Paul since he was stationed here when he was 18 and in the Air Force. I joked that we were going to make him an honorary San Antonian. He responded by telling me, "I might as will be from Texas. As a matter of fact, a couple of years ago when I was here, I went to see my old apartment (somewhere off Military Road) and knocked on the door and just about gave the people that lived there a heart attack. So, you know, San Antonio been very special to my heart. You know, I'm always happy. I try to live my life in way that will bring dignity and respect to first of all my God, my family and my country. I know it sounds very cliché-like, but you know I do it while I'm on tequila too." No, Paul it's not cliche-like- we know you really mean it; we can tell by your frequent visits. Earlier, I spoke of Paul's philanthropist and serious side, and in order to understand that, you must know that Paul was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth. So he recognizes the necessity of education and giving of one's self. He remains strongly rooted in the Latino community, working with civic and educational groups and his main contributions go to the National Hispanic Scholarship Fund (NHSF). Paul also contributes to such charitable efforts as Comic Relief, appearing on the HBO's program every year since its inception. He also hosts his own annual celebrities Golf Tournament with 100% of the proceeds going to the National Hispanic Scholarship Fund. He shared a little bit more with us, though using humor to downplay his philanthropic side. Rodriguez related a story about his affiliation with Bill Gates (Mr. Microsoft). "Last year I did a gig for Bill Gates when he announced Windows 2000. During the evening he turned to me and said, 'What's your charity" and I said 'excuse me?' and he said 'What is your charity, do you have any charities, what is your favorite cause'" (So then) I said 'It's the National Hispanic Scholarship Fund.' Well I forgot all about it, and later I get a letter from the National Hispanic Scholarship Fund (saying) that Bill Gates had given them X number of millions of dollars. (But I take very little credit for that)." Well, he got another call this year from Bill Gates to make to the Bellagio for a meeting with his executives. Rodriguez continued, "Now, you're talking about Bill Gates. George Bush is a lot easier to reach than he is. Here's the deal - it's a beautiful deal. I go perform in front of the executives on Tuesday night and the National Hispanic Scholarship Fund get's a big check on Wednesday." Paul went on to tell me a story about an incident that happened to him, "The nicest thing happened to me six months ago. I'm at Hobby Airport in Houston taking a plane from there to Miami (to do about two weeks worth on Ali and from there go on to Africa.) While at Hobby -this kid- well, young man- chases me down a ramp, and I'm really trying to catch a flight. You know, I'm sure he wants an autograph, and I finally say, 'Listen, I hope you don't think I'm a jerk, but I'm about to miss my plane and I really have to make this plane.' Well the guys says, 'No, I don't want an autograph.' I'm feeling, 'Ah, man.' Then the guys says, 'I just want to tell you that I'm graduating from MIT this year, and I went through the NHS through your scholarship- The Paul Rodriguez Scholarship- and I studied engineering, and I want to thank you; my whole family thanks you.' As I'm going down the ramp he says, 'Thanks, man. You really made a difference in my life.' I swear to you, I began to cry more than Richard Simmons does in a room full of fat (people). I got all sentimental. I'm (saying to myself), 'I don't know this guy, and I'll probably never see the guy again, but this guy is graduating from MIT!" Do you have any idea how difficult or how top of the class you gotta be to go to Massachusetts Institute of Technology? They're like ivy leaguers, and this guy is telling me he's not about to go, (but that) he's about to graduate from there. This is the first time I've actually seen the fruits of my labor." It was obviously a very significant moment in Paul's life, which he compared with the first time he met his son. Paul has a 16-year-old son who he described as having his mother's looks and his father's wit. According to a very proud father, his son is the No. 1 rated amateur skater in the world. Paul joked about not having to pay child support because his son makes so much money that he doesn't need it. Never trying to pry into someone's personal life, I was curious to ask about a story relayed to me about Rodriguez's parents. I asked Paul if it was true that he had bought his parents the house they had worked in. "It's kind of true. They didn't work at a house; my mother was a maid at a house. My father was a field worker, a migrant farm worker. But, yes, it's true- the first thing I did when Norman Lear gave me a break back in 1984 - I think PBS made a documentary on it called Mexicanos Americanos the Mexican American series- (is buy them a house) and its very true. The wooden floors that momma use to scrub - (well) she's still scrubbing, but now she's scrubbing them for herself. It's true it was a very wonderful day in my life," explained a very proud Rodriguez. What encouraging words do you have for the younger generation, I asked. He quickly responded, "I would recommend they listen to a song called Over the Rainbow or listen to a song that says, 'dreams can definitely come true.' They can happen to you if you believe in your heart. I mean, I know this sounds trite, but don't take 'no' for an answer - have the tenacity of a pit bull - and then believe in the fact that you're good enough even if you're brown enough. Hey, I once asked my father why they were prejudiced against Mexicans and my dad said, 'Because they're jealous of the color of your skin.' I said ('Nah'), and he said, 'Yeah, they are. They all go to the beach trying to get a tan to look like you.' I never forgot that, from then on- may God forgive me- I've always had a superiority feeling." In closing, I asked Paul if he wanted to relay anything to his fans in San Antonio. He replied, "I really appreciate the support. They should try to catch me in person, because I don't plan on doing this for much longer. There's a lot of really good comedians coming out, and I'd like to more or less get behind the scene and try to produce and write. I want to help other people get into show business and leave the comedy to the young crop of comedians that you see at shows like Qué Loco and that you'll see performing with me all over the country. When I started I was pretty much the only dude out there. The closest thing to a Latino back then was Freddie Prinze, (my idol) Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong now there's a lot of talent out there. |

Six months after a tour bus accident in January that killed drummer Jesse
Arreola, the remaining members of Los Palominos, all brothers, are back on
tour.
Younger brother Julio Arreola is now playing drums for the Uvalde-based
quartet known for its amazing vocal harmonies.
"It was really tough there for a while," said accordionist Johnny Arreola
from Miami, where the band was on tour. "There were times there when we
really didn't know if we could go on. Our mother really took this hard and,
naturally, she was worried about our going on out on tour again."
The rest of the band is bajo sexto player James Arreola and guitarist Jorge
Arreola.

DEL RIO - Tejano singer Stephanie Lynn is free on bond while a companion
remains in custody following their arrests last month on federal drug
possession charges.
Lynn , 28, whose legal name is Stephanie Lynn Rivera, and Valdemar Guadiana,
37, were arrested June 1 at a Border Patrol checkpoint at Cline following a
routine stop, according to records at the U.S. District Court in Del Rio.
According to court records, two bags containing 117 pounds of marijuana were
found in the couple's car.
Lynn and Guadiana were jailed on felony charges of possession with intent to
sell, distribute or dispense marijuana and conspiracy to distribute
marijuana.
Conviction on those charges could result in a sentence of up to 20 years in
prison and fines totaling $1 million.
According to court records, the pair gave San Antonio addresses as well as
an address in Del Rio.
Both said they were unable to obtain counsel, and the court appointed each
an attorney. The case has been assigned to U.S. District Judge Fred Biery.
Lynn was released on $30,000 bond after a $3,000 surety was paid.
Guadiana remains in custody at an undisclosed location.
According to court records, Lynn and Guadiana were arrested after a Border
Patrol agent at the checkpoint became suspicious when he noticed a strong
smell of detergent in the car.
After obtaining permission to search the car, records indicate the agent
opened the trunk, noticed the detergent odor along with the smell of
marijuana and found two bags containing 117 pounds of marijuana.
Lynn appeared in federal court June 4, and her attorney waived a second
appearance scheduled for June 26, according to court records.
Born in San Antonio, Lynn performed as a teen-ager with her brothers as
Stephanie Lynn and Hi Energy.
In 1993 she was signed to the EMI Latin record label.
Her single "Solo Ojos Para Ti" reached No. 32 on the Billboard Hot Latin
Tracks in late 1994. Two other singles, "Pegadita," and "Amarradita," also
received airplay.
Rivera's latest CD is "Que Debo Hacer," on the Fonovisa record label.
A new remixed single, "La Carta," is now on the radio charts at Tejano
stations.

accordion prodigy. Monika is a promising singer from a Kenedy area family that
has produced several generations of Tejano musicians.Her father, "Junior" Farias
led Los Artisticos in the seventies and eighties and her uncle leads the
well-known group Jody Farias y Increible. Monika's talent was recognized in a
contest in 1996 that resulted in a CD from Freddie Records. The group is now
touring an working on a new album to be released later this year. Young Robert
Casillas was a star pupil of the late, legendary accordionist Valerio Longoria.
Robert appears with his mentor, Rodolfo Lopez, who accompanies him on bajo

Six years after her tragic death, Selena will in a new music video with Los Tres Reyes, a band she never met. This music video has her coming on stage in a black dress singing her hit, "No Me Queda Mas". Some 900 frames of concert videos were used to create this 30 second posthumous music video. Mr. Quintanilla said he wants to keep her alive through her music and make sure her memory is preserved. "Resolved, That the House of Representatives of the 77th Texas Legislature hereby commends Tejano R.O.O.T.S., Inc. for establishing the Tejano R.O.O.T.S. Hall of Fame Museum and recognize this institution as the official state Tejano Music Hall of Fame and the community of Alice as the official Birthplace of Tejano Music" reads the resolution. Around 1:45 today on FM384 on the way to Karnes City, Los Palominos drummer, Jesse Arreola was up front of the bus talking to the bus driver. When the driver noticed he was about run a stop sign, he slammed on breaks, hit a ditch, throwing Jesse out the front window. Then the bus ran over him. Jesse was 31 yrs old. SAN ANTONIO -- Conjunto legend Valerio Longoria passed away Friday
morning in San Antonio after a months-long battle with cancer.
Longoria, 75, was a 1983 Tejano Conjunto Hall of Famer and in 1986 was
awarded a National Heritage Award, the nation's highest honor given to folk
artists. Over the years Longoria became a storied name in conjunto circles
and he is considerd one of the towering figures in the evolution of conjunto
music.
Officials are working out funeral arrangements and a spokesman said
the family is in dire need of donations for funeral expenses.

By ALISA VALDES-RODRIGUEZ, Times Staff Writer On Wednesday, the first Latin Grammy Awards show will be held at Staples Center and broadcast live on CBS. So, what, exactly, is a Latin Grammy? And how--or why--is it separate from a regular Grammy? Here's the short answer: A Latin Grammy is an award honoring musical excellence by artists who perform in Spanish or Portuguese. What's that, you say? You thought the regular Grammys already did that? Well, they do--but only in seven of the regular Grammys' 98 categories, most of which are devoted to English-language genres. The Latin Grammys have 40 categories and are separate from the regular Grammys, organizers say, because the Latin music universe is too large to fit into seven categories. The regular Grammys will continue to have Latin categories. The Latin Grammys are produced by the Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, established in 1997, after a decade in development, as the first international corporation of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, the organization that produces the Grammy Awards. The Latin academy has 2,600 members, compared to the national academy's 14,000. The Latin academy was created by NARAS to address Latin music growth, which is twice the pace of the overall industry. The national academy and its charitable arms have come under fire in recent years since the publication of several articles in The Times. The stories disclosed that Grammy chief C. Michael Greene is the highest-paid executive of any not-for-profit organization in the country and that NARAS has consistently overstated the scale of its philanthropic activities. And, expectedly, the Latin Grammys have also been a magnet for controversy, ranging from concerns about segregation to hostilities among ethnic, national and linguistic groups who have been lumped together--sometimes with great difficulty--beneath the huge "Latin music" umbrella. Even Greene, president and chief executive of both academies (longtime record executive Mauricio Abaroa is senior vice president and executive director of LARAS), confesses this first year for the Latin Grammys has been imperfect and difficult. "The most difficult thing in trying to create an awards structure under a very large, very short word--'Latin'--is there are so many forms of music, and there are very few things that connect all of these countries other than language," says Greene. "In putting the show together we are constantly reminded of that . . . There is no way a singular awards structure, much less a two-hour TV special, is going to be able to be conclusive, or inclusive." The first Latin Grammys were originally scheduled to take place next year, but several factors--including Ricky Martin's rousing performance at the Grammys in 1999 and growth of interest in Latin music worldwide--inspired the fast-track timetable. According to LARAS, "the chief aim of the Latin Grammy Awards is to recognize excellence and create a greater public awareness of the cultural diversity and contributions of Latin recording artists." By "Latin," the academy says it refers to musical genre (or a music's sound) or language--Spanish and Portuguese--and not to an artist's perceived ethnicity. In other words, an artist is eligible for a Latin Grammy because she or he records in Spanish or Portuguese, and not because she or he is from Mexico or has a Puerto Rican grandma. At least that's what the academy says, and as far as the nominations and awards go, it appears to be true. But questions have been raised about the programming of the Latin Grammy show, which will feature many more stars from the English-language world than from Spanish- or Portuguese-speaking countries. Greene says the academy has also come under fire from some musicians who consider their work to be "Latin" in sound or origin, but who do not perform in Spanish or Portuguese and are therefore not eligible for a Latin Grammy. These groups include Celtic musicians from the Basque region of Spain and Haitian artists who say their compa is a kissing cousin of the Dominican merengue, but that it just happens to be sung in French Creole. While the Latin Grammys are at present very strict in linguistic classification, Greene says the academy will listen to concerns about changing the rules if they are brought before the board. Another possible solution, ultimately, would be the creation of separate academies for Brazilian and Mexican music, both of which, Greene says, are "very likely to come along in the next few years." The first step toward winning a Latin Grammy is having a record company or academy member enter a recording, which must have been released during the eligibility dates. Then the recording is screened by a group of experts who decide what category it belongs to. Then a list of entries by category is sent to voting members. (The Latin academy will not disclose how many of its 2,600 members are eligible to vote.) The results are considered nominations. After that, there's a final round of voting, and--ta-da!--a Latin Grammy show. Airing from 9 to 11 p.m. Wednesday, the Latin Grammy telecast will be an hour shorter than the regular Grammys. Through CBS Broadcasting International, the program will also be seen in 120 other nations, according to LARAS. The academy pursued the possibility of a Spanish-language simulcast in the U.S., but it didn't transpire. Wednesday's telecast is the first time a primarily Latin-themed music awards program has occupied a prime-time slot on CBS. This has led to special considerations when programming the show's performers. On the one hand, LARAS has a self-stated mission of raising awareness of the richness and diversity of the Latin music universe. On the other hand, it has the desire to create a show that will bring in high ratings on an English-language network. These goals are clearly at odds, and the Latin academy knows it. If they program too many mainstream English-language pop (or "crossover") stars to draw a wide audience to the show, they risk offending Latin music purists. But if they feature too many groups that are well-known in the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking worlds, but unknown to the bulk of CBS viewers, they risk losing ratings. The Latin academy says it has sought to draw the widest possible audience by featuring pop artists who straddle both worlds, such as Christina Aguilera and Ricky Martin, and singers such as Celia Cruz, a performer somewhat known to a mainstream audience. Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez were to perform the nominated duet from her debut album--the sole Spanish-language song on the disc--but he had to withdraw because of complications with his wife's pregnancy. Award presenters include actors Andy Garcia and Jimmy Smits. In perhaps its most controversial decision, the Latin academy invited 'N Sync to perform a Spanish-language song it has recorded in a duet with Puerto Rican vocal group Son by Four. Such compromise brings repercussions, some unpleasant. Fonovisa, the nation's largest independent Latin music label, has said it will not support the Latin Grammys because the telecast will not feature any of the label's popular Mexican regional acts and, they say, favors artists associated with Sony Music's labels. The telecast will feature famed ranchera and pop star Alejandro Fernandez, a top seller in the Mexican regional genres, but this brings little consolation to Fonovisa, as Fernandez records for Sony Discos. Fonovisa and other, smaller labels have argued the event is biased against the more countrified Mexican regional genres. Greene acknowledged the prospect of Mexican regional performances worries advertisers, who say the music has little mass appeal. But Greene says he fought hard to have Fernandez included. This tiptoeing around Mexican genres has offended many, especially considering that Mexican regional music is the top-selling Latin genre in the U.S. The Latin Grammy Awards have had to wrestle with many such complicated issues. The difficulties involved stem from the near-impossibility of lumping together many diverse cultures under the term "Latin," an invented identity that means very different things to different people, depending on their nationality, ethnic background, race and language. All of that said, however, many people still have high hopes for the Latin Grammys. If nothing else, many say, the ceremony will provide a window onto the diverse world of Latin music for many in the U.S. who have an interest in the music but who have little access to Spanish-language radio or music videos. Greene, sounding somewhat weary from the many battles he's had to face in getting the inaugural event off the ground, concludes: "The only thing I know for sure is in this first year we're going to make some mistakes. We're hopeful they're not institutional mistakes. We hope it's just a matter of fine-tuning." The Latin Grammy Awards will air Wednesday at 9 p.m. on CBS. "This album is the beginning, it's the roots of Los Lobos. It's a feel-good record and it brings back a lot of great memories," says Los Lobos member Cesar Rosas. SAN ANTONIO -- Two San Antonio-based Tejano artists, David Lee Garza and Stefani Montiel, were among the list of Latin Grammy award nominees announced Friday in Miami.
Garza and Montiel were nominated in the best Tejano performance category. Other nominees in that category included Bobby Pulido, the Kumbia Kings and Los Palominos, who won in the Tejano category during the regular Grammy Awards held in February.

The cancellation was announced in San Diego, where the show was to open June 13. Co-producer Michelle Vega said last week's cancellation of a two-week run at Los Angeles's Universal Amphitheater was a "crippling blow." May 9, 2000 is the date for DAVID LEE GARZA's annual PAC FEST, a day of musical celebration where the VIP's are the top 1600 students from high schools in the central Texas region, including Poteet, Pleasanton, Jourdanton, Stockdale, Lytle, Pearsall, Charlotte, and Floresville. PAC stands for PASSING, ATTENDANCE, and CONDUCT. The festivities begin at 9 AM and end at 2:45 PM at the Strawberry Festival Grounds. Approximately 100 volunteers will set up, greet, and feed the 1600 students bussed to the location. The superstars performing for the students include the master accordionist himself, DAVID LEE GARZA and Tejano Music's Male Vocalist of the Year, JAY PEREZ. Rock bands OH BOY and PRAIRIE are also scheduled to perform. A country western band and a brand new Tejano band formed by high school students (MARASOL) will clinch the line up. In past years, the students truly celebrate the day with dancing, contests, and meeting their recording stars. It is a special day where all the positive aspects of young students are recognized.

LOS PALOMINOS CELEBRATE BIG IN UVALDE TEXAS March 28, 2000 marked a big day in
the history of Uvalde Texas, the Honey Capital of the World. A new
international distinction is that UVALDE is home to the Grammy Award Winners LOS
PALOMINOS. Johnny, James, Jesse, and George Arreola received the Keys to the
City, a proclamation from Mayor Gus Nutze, recognition certificate from the
Chamber of Commerce, and the Texas Flag flown over the State Capitol in Austin
presented by State Representative Tracy King. Councilman Lecho Quiroga
presented the Keys to the City to the PALOMINOS parents, reminiscing when Mr.
Arreola used to drive the quartet around in an old van. LOS PALOMINOS now own
their own tour bus, an 18-wheeler, and tons of light and sound equipment thanks
to their great talent and their humble attitude, an attitude that was obvious
when Johnny accepted the Keys to the City, exclaiming "This is the biggest honor
from our City, and it is unexpected." After the ceremonies at City Council, LOS
PALOMINOS threw a massive, free, appreciation concert for the City of Uvalde.
Fans from Uvalde, San Antonio, Monterrey, Coahuila, and as far as Alabama were on hand to enjoy as the show commenced at 8:30 PM with their brand new single "QUIERO SER." The complete concert was broadcast live on TEJANO 102, a station that deserves to be congratulated. The sound on the airwaves was as close to a final mix as you can get. (Fort Worth, TX) -- This Friday will mark the 5th year anniversary of the
death of Tejano star Selena. As a special tribute to the late star who
impacted the lives of many young women, a talent contest in her honor,
was held Saturday in Fort Worth. The event took place at the Town Center
Mall, where young ladies between the ages of six and 17, competed by singing
one of Selena's songs. While some chose to sing more traditional mariachi
ballads, others chose Selena's trademark pop-cumbias and disco medleys.
The event attracted young ladies from all over the North Texas area. In the six-to-eight age category, Roxanne Lennett Marroquin of Sherman, Texas took first prize. Jessica Flores of Grand Prairie won the 10-to-12 age group, and Harlinda Rosales of Fort Worth won the 13-to-16 age category. Providing a special tribute to Selena, was Selena impersonator Letty Mota who sang a montage of various Selena songs. |

Tejano Singer Laid To Rest

Tejano singer Estefan, who released recordings under the Joey and
Fonovisa record labels, passed away Tuesday in Corpus Christi. He was 36. Estefan (real name Esteban C Mendez) recorded and performed in the San Antonio area during the mid'90s. He also performed at Fiesta Noche Del Rio show and at Fiesta Texas. The Brownsville native was born on Oct. 18, 1963. "He was influenced to pursue a career in music by his West Oso High School music teacher Dr. Porter," said Estefan's sister Josie Mendez. "That's all he (Estefan talked about), was his music. He was so proud of what he had accomplished." Survivors include his father, Gilberto Mendez of Brownsville; nine brothers, Julian and Gilbert Mendez, both of Corpus Christi, Isaias and Esequiel Mendez, both of Mexico, Moises Mendez of Bay City, Elias, Saul and Job Mendez, all of San Antonio, and Paul Mendez of California; three sisters, Josie Mendez and Ruth Edwards, both of Corpus Christi and Esther Garza of Fort Worth. By Ramiro Burr Express-News Staff Writer During Tejano star Emilio Navaira's meteoric rise in the '90s, one of his biggest hits was the raucous polka "Ya no me pones atencisn (You don't pay attention to me anymore)." Today, the title seems prophetic as his record sales dip and fans offer their allegiance to emerging singers such as Bobby Pulido and Michael Salgado. The '90s belonged to Emilio, however. He was king of Tejano; Selena was queen. They were regional superstars in those heady days of the Tejano renaissance, breaking sales and attendance records, and dominating the Tejano Music Awards. From 1992 to 1997, Emilio took home multiple statuettes, including best male vocalist and entertainer. The singer-songwriter went on to have two successful country crossover albums and a Grammy Award nomination, along with several Billboard hit singles. But that was yesteryear. In January, for the first time in 10 years, 37-year-old Emilio was not mentioned when nominations for the 2000 Tejano Music Awards were announced. He has, however, generated a lot of attention recently - of the unwelcome kind. After his Jan. 9 arrest on charges of assault and resisting arrest at a North Side hotel, Emilio faced the media outside his attorney's office. In the glare of TV lights and photoflashes, he read somberly from a prepared statement, apologizing to fans and family, and contending he is "factually innocent of all charges." As reporters shouted questions, Emilio told them his lawyers had advised him not to comment on the case, then ducked back into the office. Stalled career? While die-hard fans remain at his side, Emilio's critics say his arrest has sharpened the focus on what they consider a crumbling career. But Emilio's legal trouble is only one of the concerns surrounding the San Antonio-born singer. Tejano Promoter's Body Found

By Ramiro Burr Express-News Staff Writer Authorities in Santa Fe, N.M. have confirmed that a body found three weeks in northern New Mexico is that of Dale Garcia, who has been missing since Jan. 21. The state Office of the Medical Investigator said an autopsy determined the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head. Garcia, who was a public information officer for the secretary of state, had worked as a promoter in the Tejano market in San Antonio since 1990 until his return to his hometown of Santa Fe, N.M. last year. Garcia was last seen by his parents on Jan 21. His pickup truck was found burned and abandoned near Albuquerque on Jan. 23, and arson investigators determined it was deliberately set on fire. His body was found about three weeks later on a roadside near Tesuque, about 10 miles north of Santa Fe. But because the body was badly decomposed, authorities could not readily confirm identity. In San Antonio, Garcia worked for Tejas Records as a record promoter and was active in the Tejano industry in the '90s. "He loved San Antonio, and when he went home, he looked for excuses to come back to visit," said his friend Denise Miranda, who had organized fundraising efforts here to help in the search. "I'll always remember his funny sense of humor and his kindness." A joint investigation between state police, the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department and the Santa Fe Police Department is under way. The biggest news was veteran rock guitarist Carlos Santana, who picked up a record-tying nine Grammys for his phenomenal album "Supernatural." Other winners included Christine Aguilera for best new artists and TLC for best R&B. San Antonio's Chris Perez beat the odds in edging out heavyweights Los Fabulosos Cadillacs and Los Jaguares in the best Latin rock/alternative performance.

TEJANO MUSICIAN INDICTED: Drug charge hits Tejano band

James "Jaime" Farias, 32, was arrested Oct. 15 outside a San Antonio truck stop while traveling with the band. Farias is a songwriter and the keyboardist for the band, which headlined at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo. According to a police report, La Tropa F was under surveillance by a plainclothes detective who was following up on a Crime Stoppers tip that there was cocaine on the tour bus.

Dallas, Tx - Far West Discoteque in Dallas, Tx has filed a lawsuit against Grupo Limite. After a verbal agreement with Promociones Apodaca, the booking agent for Norteno Grupo Limite, Far West started publicizing on Feb 2, 2000 that Grupo Limite would celebrate Valentines Day at Far Far Disco in Dallas, Tx on February 11, 2000. According to Alfredo Hinojosa of Far West, "Promoters of Far West and Promociones Apodaca have a repertoire of negotiations of more than ten years of working together. For this reason, it was not necessary to make a contract of work for the said date, as with all other groups of Apodaca there were never any contracts made."
The problem started when Apodaca was wanting grupo "Tigrillos" to perform on February 11, 2000 at Far West Disco's sister discoteque called "OK Corral" in Houston, Tx. This was not possible since previous engagement with two other group had already been done. In mid-afternoon on Feb 8, three days before the scheduled performance of Limite at Far West, Apodaca decided to cancel and have Limite perform at Far West's competition, Club 2001. According to Mr. Hinojosa of Far West, Mr. Oscar Flores of Promociones Apodaca stated he moved the event because Far West failed to make a deposit of $25,000. "Far West and Promocions Apodaca have always worked under a gentlemen's agreement, in which there are many witnesses". Far West has placed a half million dollar lawsuit against grupo Limite and Mr. Oscar Flores of Promociones Apodaca for their negligence and failure to appear at Far West in the city of Dallas, Tx on February 11, 2000. |

There's the upcoming musical "Selena Forever," set to open March 21 at Municipal Auditorium, and all the buzz sure to come as we approach the fifth anniversary of her death on March 31. Hard-core fans will take special interest in the new "All My Hits/Todos Mis Exitos Vol. II" CD, which hits the streets on Feb. 29. The 16-track CD will include a live version of "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom," recorded during her 1995 Astrodome concert for the Houston Rodeo. The first single will be the Pedro Infante-identified "Cien Aqos," produced here with a new arrangement, as well as two English tracks, "Captive Heart" and "A Million to Juan." The 20th annual Tejano Music Awards are scheduled March 11 at the Alamodome. The awards nominees were announced Saturday night during the Nominees Dance at the Tejano Stampede nightclub. Performing Saturday were Elida y Avante, Joe Lopez, Los Desperados, Los Garcia Brothers, Stampede and Stefani Montiel. Intocable grabbed five nominations including best song "El Amigo que Se Fue," and album "Contigo," while the A.B. Quintanilla and his Kumbia Kings grabbed six nominations including song "Fuiste Mala," album "Amor, Familia y Respeto," and most promising band.

By Ramiro Burr Express-News Arts Writer A veteran Tejano music manager and former San Antonio resident has been reported missing in Santa Fe, N.M. A Santa Fe police spokesman said Dale A. Garcia's family filed a missing person report Sunday afternoon after a sheriff's deputy found Garcia's 1999 Mazda pickup abandoned near Albuquerque. The truck's cab had been set on fire. Garcia lived in San Antonio for 10 years before returning to Santa Fe, his hometown, in July to work as a public information officer for New Mexico's secretary of state. He had managed the career of Tejano singer Stefani, also a New Mexico native, for several years. 4:30 p.m. 1/10/2000 "The past several months have been very difficult for both me and my family. I understand that part of being an entertainer is that your private life is subject to public scrutiny. I also understand I am a public figure and have a responsibility to my family, fans and community. I have for years gladly accepted that honor, and believe my actions for many years have proven that "I want to say I am factually not guilty of any offence. My actions the other morning have been misconstrued and inaccurately reported. I am extremely proud of my heritage and culture, and family background. That is the essence of the music I perform. I have not, and would not, say anything derogatory about anyone due to their background or cultural heritage. I also want to say that I have the utmost respect for law enforcement and the San Antonio Police in particular. "I wish I could speak now in detail about the events that occurred that morning. Unfortunately, because those events have become the subject of criminal charges, my attorneys have advised me not to address the facts of the case, although I would like to. "My attorneys have assured me that soon I will be able to explain in detail the events that led to these charges I want to apologize to everyone, in particular my family and fans - who have been negatively affected by these embarrassing and unfortunate situation. According to the San Antonio Express-News, Emilio was arrested early Sunday morning after police were called for a distrubance at AmeriSuites Hotel on the north side of San Antonio. The San Antonio police tried to calm Emilio down after he and his 22-year-old girlfriend, Maria Ibarra from Torreon, Coahuila, Mx had a dispute that started in their room and ended in the lobby. Ms. Ibarra, told police she and Emilio had been drinking at a bar and had returned to their room when the 37-year-old Emilio became enraged during an argument, kicked her small black dog, chased her into an elevator and followed her into the lobby. He then threw a set of keys at her, hitting her arm. San Antonio Express-news printed: "According to a police report, officers were trying to calm Navaira and separate the couple when he shoved one of the officers, yelled out Ibarra's name and tried to lunge toward her. The officers wrestled him to the ground before they could fit handcuffs to his wrists, the report stated. He was charged with one count of assault and one count of resisting arrest, both misdemeanor charges. He posted a $1,850 bond Sunday and was released from Bexar County Jail." | Chosen to play Selena was 21 year old Rebecca Valadez of San Antonio, who sang backup with Super Grupo Mazz and backup on the Janet Jackson 1998 Tour. Veronica Vasquez, 24 of New York, was also chosen to play Selena. Two actresses were chosen due to the strain of performing on a 30 city tour. Lisa Ybarra, 19 of San Antonio, will play Suzette and 11 year old Denise Stefanie Gonzalez of Los Angeles will play the young Selena. The play is to premiere in San Antonio on March 21. The tour will then head to Dallas, McAllen, El Paso, Houston and Corpus Christi. Other cities will be added later. |

Attention visual artists! The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center wants you to participatc in the
Nineteenth Annual Tejano Conjunto Festival en San Antonio, 2000 Juried Poster Contest. Works
will be judged in four categories: Junior High School, High School, College, and Open.
The artist whose work is selected as the overall winner will receive a $2000 cash award. Additional cash awards include $100 for top selection in each category and $50 for Honorable mention in each category. The winning selection will be used as the official poster for the Tejano Conjunto Festival en San Antonio, 2000. All works must be submitted to the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, 1300 Guadalupe St. San Antonio, Texas 78207 by February 18, 2000 at 5:30 pm. The works submitted must be 22 inches by 28 inches (22” x 28”) in the portrait layout. The theme must be Conjunto music, that unique Tex-Mex musical form that uses the three-row button accordion as its principle instrument. The words TEJANO CONJUNTO FESTIVAL EN SAN ANTONIO, 2000 must be placed within the artwork. The medium used is left to the discretion of the artist, but remember that we are looking for a colorful, graphic and visual interpretation of Conjunto music which will be reproduced and distributed as the official poster of the Tejano Conjunto Festival en San Antonio, 2000. The Nineteenth Annual Tejano Conjunto Festival en San Antonio, 2000 will be held from May 9-14, 2000 at the Guadalupe Theater and Rosedale Park and will feature six days and 30 of the best Conjuntos in the nation.
